Stop Teaching the Line. Start Teaching the Queue.
For teachers who already know the material. The scarce resource is coverage under time pressure.
If you can hear a wrong guide tone from across the room and name three books that already solved the student’s problem, this page is for you. You do not need another explanation of what a ii–V is. You need the student to meet the whole set while the clock is honest.
Advanced teaching often fails in the last mile: the binder of PDFs that never opens past page one, the “work all keys” assignment that somehow lives forever in B♭, the line that sounds brilliant when the student chooses the order and fragile when the room chooses for them.
If they can play it only when they choose the order, they do not know it yet.
Retrieval practice, but make it musical
Musicians already understand tempo ceilings. Raise the BPM only after the example is clean. The parallel for repertoire coverage is a queue: a finite list of examples, each shown once under the metronome, then reshuffled. That is not a gimmick. It is a design choice about retrieval under time pressure.
What you already know gets played the most. The rest waits. Change the interface so the rest cannot wait forever.
Build the exercise like a set list
In eization, an exercise is a named list of examples. Edit keeps it on that device. One example per line. Bars set the length of what is on screen. Meter, swing, count-in, and clicks are lesson variables—the same way you would set a click for a recording take.
- Eight to twelve examples beat fifty lines of optimism.
- Name the job of the set: “bridge language,” “left-hand shapes,” “odd-bar cells.”
- Match bars to the example. A four-bar cell with one bar on the clock is a self-own.
- Update replaces the lines. Save as new keeps the old exercise. Download writes an
.eizfile if you want a file-shaped backup.
Stock exercises (Scales, Chord Tones, Motivic Development, and the rest) are seeds. Your studio exercises will often be custom—and that is fine.
Share links as studio infrastructure
Share from Edit copies a link. Opening it on another device can Add or Preview that exercise. Exact matches open quietly. You can hand a student one URL instead of a paragraph of hopes. For common student problems without inventing the list from scratch, start from more exercises.
For lines from books they already own, type only the lines in play this week—see Books you own. The pages name books; they do not reprint them.
Ask AI, then stay the editor
Ask AI opens the open exercise in ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini so the chat can coach and, when ready, return a block of examples. Paste into Edit. Update. You decide what stays. The site does not call a model. That boundary matters: the queue remains yours.
Lesson variables worth treating as pedagogy
- Tempo: raise only after coverage, not to hide gaps.
- Meter / bottom number: the clock stays eighth notes; BPM is the rate of the bottom-number unit. Do not pretend the UI rescales the clock into a different universe when you change the bottom number.
- Swing / count-in: set them like session take settings, not decorations.
- Repeat: useful; still not a substitute for visiting weak examples.
What not to outsource
eization will not hear whether the take was good. It will not grade articulation. It will not replace your ear or your relationship with the student. It will not be a band-in-a-box or a notation program. Its job is narrower and more useful for advanced rooms: keep one example present, keep time, and stop the favorite from eating the hour.
Teach the line in the lesson. Send them home with a queue.
